The Last Tuesday Project

A group of friends get together once a month thanks to the wonder of modern technology to discuss one topic. That topic can come in the form of either a question, a subject, a claim, or a statement. The thing is, only one of us knows what that topic is going to be. That person shall henceforth be known as the Dimbleby. (It's a long story.) The Dimbleby has two topics in their pocket. They tell us the first one and then the rest of us have the opportunity to veto it based on a majority vote. If we veto the first topic, we hear the second topic. We cannot veto the second topic. You know, just to add a little bit of jeopardy to the whole thing. From that point on we have an hour to each research the topic. We can do it whatever way we want to, either through the internet, or books, or going to the library, or shouting across the road at your neighbour... Once the hour is up, we get back together again and talk about it. The Dimbleby guides us, asks us questions on what we've researched. At the end of it we come to a conclusion. Or not, as the case may be. That brings us to the point of The Last Tuesday Project. This is less about the conclusions we come to, although they can be fun and interesting. It's more about how we get there. Doing this sort of research - looking for evidence, sifting through the crap - is something anyone can do. We don't want to tell you what to think, and we're loathe to say that we want to tell you how to think. What we want to do is give you the tools so that you can come to your own conclusions without being swayed by biased information. Being able to detect fact from fiction, science from pseudoscience, brilliant ideas from bullshit. One group of friends, one topic, one hour to research. Welcome to The Last Tuesday Project.

Welcome to this month's TWOsday episode of The Last Tuesday Project.

For this episode, Hayley had the excellent idea that we should talk about our favourite Romans. We did this... but it took us a little while to get there. IKEA meatballs, defunct British brands, kennel cough, and remote Norfolk villages were all subjects we nattered on about until we got to the main feature. Afterwards we discussed password security and Episode 3 of the What Doctors Don't Tell You podcast (we listen so you don't have to).

TRIGGER WARNING: At around 52 minutes, during the WDDTY section, we talk about antidepressants and suicide. If you don't feel comfortable with these subjects, please feel free to skip the end of this episode.

Friends! Romans! Countrymen! Welcome to the Last Tuesday Project!

In this episode, Alex asks an unusual question... Do all roads really lead to Rome? Hayley and Shaun puzzle over this, covering the manipulation of data, whether roads actually lead away from Rome, and how many dinari it would cost to get from Lindum Colonia to Roma. All this, plus plenty more, in this week's historic (and ambling) episode.

Welcome to this month's TWOsday episode of The Last Tuesday Project.

We spend a brief 10 minutes talking about the topic of the main episode, before revisiting the subject matter of Episode 7. The latest episode of the What Doctor's Don't Tell You podcast spent some time discussing the subject of breast cancer screening and some associated subjects, and we thought that we would take some time to discuss what they say. Finally, we look at the recent furore surrounding Brew Dog's Pink IPA campaign, as well as other "awareness" campaigns.

Ooh, matron! It's The Last Tuesday Project!

This month is a listener's questions special! We offer thanks to Daniel Pott for his two splendid questions. We ended up vetoing the first question on radiosensitivity (in spite of our interest in the subject), and went on to look at the Weekend Effect. Are you really more likely to die if you are admitted to hospital on a weekend than on a weekday? Would the infamous "7 Day NHS" fix such an issue? How much is fact, and how much is politics?

Our next TWOsday episode, Episode 19a, will be released on Tuesday 13th February 2018.

It's a brand new year, and we're sending you a post-festive-season gift. It's this month's TWOsday episode of The Last Tuesday Project!

This time we're giving you a selection of outtakes and deleted scenes, full of off-topic nonsense and random claptrap. Alex, Hayley, and Shaun get together with Simon, Episode 18's Guest Tuesday.

Merry Tuesday, you filthy animals! Welcome to episode 18 of The Last Tuesday Project!

It's Boxing Day in the UK, which is kind of like a second Christmas, so consider this episode our slightly belated Christmas gift to you. Aren't you lucky!

This month Alex, Hayley and Shaun are joined by Guest Tuesday Simon. We all surprise each other by vetoing a question on the Placebo Effect and end up talking at great length about Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Is there any evidence for it working? What are its origins? And why won't anyone give Hayley a straight answer as to what it is?!

Our next TWOsday episode, Episode 18a, will be released on Tuesday 9th January 2018.

It's TWOsday! It's almost Christmas! HAVE AN EXTRA EPISODE!

Help! We've been infiltrated by another podcast!

This month at The Last Tuesday Project we have the pleasure of being joined by our friends over at the Old News podcast. Russell and David not only act as our joint Dimblebies this month, but also our first Guest Tuesday Dimblebies.

Alex, Hayley and Shaun decided to veto a question on the Genome Project and instead ended up with their trickiest research subject yet - a question related to the Orlando shooting in 2016.

Our next TWOsday episode, Episode 17a, will be released on 12th December.

Prepare yourself for a podcast filled with fright, for 'tis the Hallowe'en special of The Last Tuesday Project!

As this episode is out on Hallowe'en, we felt it appropriate to do something a little different, and a little spooky. Hayley is our Dimbleboo!, while Shaun and Alex cower in a corner, and Guest Tuesday Tammy stands with her wooden stake, ready to do whatever she has to. Yes, folks, we're talking vampires!

Our next TWOsday episode, Episode 16a, will be released on 14th November.

Welcome to another TWOsday episode of The Last Tuesday Project! This time we go back to what we're good at - very off-topic descents into the jammiest of rabbit holes.

Sep 27, 2017

Welcome to a (slightly belated) episode of The Last Tuesday Project! Sorry about the delay, folks. Alex had a bit of a mare with his audio editing software telling him he'd saved stuff when it clearly hadn't. Not that he's bitter or anything...

This month is a guest question episode, courtesy of Patreon donor Stephen Douglas. We decided not to talk about whether climate change had any good elements (although we all agreed that it was an interesting topic), which meant that we had the opportunity to talk about Twitter!

Also, this month we welcome back Kirioth as a Guest Tuesday! He's far funnier than we are, and we're sure you're going to enjoy listening.

Our next TWOsday episode, Episode 15a, will be released on 10th October.

Welcome to another TWOsday episode of The Last Tuesday Project! This time, because we're all currently busy dealing with something called Life, we've put together a selection of outtakes from the last few months. All irreverent, and mostly completely irrelevant to the episodes during which they were recorded. Enjoy!

With thanks, as always, to Strong4Life for the use of his music.

Aug 29, 2017

Let me take you on a journey through time, many Tuesdays ago...

This month on The Last Tuesday Project we take a closer look at the so-called Dark Ages (more accurately known as the Early Middle Ages). Alex asks Hayley and Shaun to look into something which, on the surface, seems a little ludicrous - did a comet have anything to do with those "Dark" times? In true clickbait style, what we find out may surprise you...

We also investigate the origin of the term "Dark Ages", and what exactly constitutes a Dirty Snowball?

Our next TWOsday episode, Episode 14a, will be released on 12th September.

Jul 25, 2017

Welcome to our birthday party - this month, The Last Tuesday Project is a year old! And we've decided to give ourselves a birthday present by talking about a subject we're all a little obsessed with... the phenomenon that are numbers stations.

Shaun acts as Dimbleby, while Alex and Hayley dig deep into this fascinating and somewhat conspiratorial subject. Alex goes off on one about the nerdy parts of this subject, and Hayley shows her ghoulish side.

And, for once, here are the show notes! (Yes, I know, I'm as shocked as you.)

Did you miss Shaun and Alex embarrassing themselves by taking a maths test for a ten year old? In that case you should go back and listen to Episode 12a.

Our next TWOsday episode, Episode 13a, will be released on 8th August.

Sit up straight, pay attention, and no talking in the back of the class while Miss is speaking! It's time for this month's TWOsday Project!

This time, Hayley plays the part of teacher, effortlessly segueing from strict disciplinarian to 1950s-drunk-on-gin-teacher trope, while Shaun and Alex embarrass ourselves by answering maths questions from an example 11+ exam.

We also reprise Episode 12 by talking about Cyril Burt and his influence on the 11+.

Done your homework yet? Don't worry, you don't have to. The Last Tuesday Project is here to provide you with its own unique form of education!

This month the Dimbleby is you, the listener! Alex, Hayley and Shaun decide to veto a question on women's rights and the two World Wars, which leaves them having to take a closer look at the English grammar school, including the 11+ exam.

Speaking of which, our next TWOsday episode will be us taking the 11+ exam! You'll be able to download that on the 11th July.

Welcome to The Last Tuesday Project Election Special!

Guest Tuesday Simon takes the reins in this recording, while Alex, Hayley, and Shaun, take a deep-dive into the manifestos of six biggest political parties in the UK: Labour, The Conservatives, The Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP), The Liberal Democrats, The Green Party, and The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).

Note that this is a very long episode - over two hours - but it's packed full of the usual interesting information and irreverent chat that you know and love. So sit back, settle in, and enjoy listening to us tease apart a lot of political words and policies.

Góður dagur og velkominn! It's episode 11 of The Last Tuesday Project, thank Týr! this month we've abandoned the comparatively warm climes of the UK and have shifted our gaze northwards.

Alex asked Hayley, Shaun, and Guest Tuesday Tammy, why Icelandic has hardly changed since the Sagas were written in the 11th, 12th and 13th Centuries. With many references to the little known website Whykyperdeea, we talk etymology, migration and invasion. We also discuss whether there are other languages which have followed a similar path, and what's so vulgar about Romansh.

Plus, as this is a British podcast, there are a number of references to a certain frozen food supermarket chain...

Our next TWOsday episode will be a UK General Election Special! No clues (mainly because, at the time of writing, we hadn't recorded it yet), but it will be released on Tuesday 6th June, two days before us Brits decide our own fate. Because that always goes well, right?

Also, have you heard our last TWOsday episode? It was Mental Health Awareness Week, so 5 of us spent some time talking about our own experiences with depression and anxiety. It's a long listen, but it's honest, frank, and surprisingly funny. Listen to Episode 10a to find out more.

Welcome to TWOsday! Yes, it's the second Tuesday of the month, so here's this month's TLTP extra episode.

Episode 10 was on the subject of whether mindfulness meditation works as a treatment for depression. Normally these extra episodes include outtakes from the main episode, plus a little extra discussion loosely based on the topic covered. However, the extra discussion turned out to be not so little. Because of this, we've decided to release that discussion by itself. It's quite a long chat, but it's a lot of fun.

Alex, Hayley and Shaun are joined by guest Tuesdays Simon and Kirioth, to talk about our own experiences with depression and anxiety. We discuss mental health and work, dealing with social situations, plus some random (and funny) experiences of our own.

Relax, breathe, be present, and accept the thoughts which enter your mind... while listening to this month's episode of The Last Tuesday Project.

Our Guest Tuesday this month is Simon, a rationalist, skeptic, curry fan, and all-round-nice-guy. Also, like Shaun, Hayley, and Alex, has some experience with the theme of this month's episode.

As Mental Health Awareness Week is coming up in May, we decided that this month's theme would be mental health. Shaun takes the Dimbleby role whether there is any evidence for mindfulness meditation as a treatment for depression. We talk about the potential harms of mindfulness meditation, our experiences with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Plus, rockstar Hayley sings us into the episode.

Don't forget that we'll be releasing our Extra TWOsday companion episode on Tuesday 9th May 2017, on the theme of mental health, plus the usual levels of irreverent conversation.

Not listened to the most recent TWOsday companion episode? Listen to our thoughts on various conspiracy theories (Lost Cosmonauts, dead Paul McCartney and dead Avril Lavigne) and Neil Young's Pono, all on Episode 009a.
